「英プラ」ストーリー「Look at the stars」から。

大昔の人たちは、空に線を引いて「星座」を創造しました。星の光を見ることは、過去の姿をみること。
空を見上げるだけで世界はひろがります。

Let’s talk about our imagination. 想像について話そうよ。
Our imagination? What about it? 想像？何のこと？

　The stars. If it’s not raining or cloudy. 星だよ。雨が降っていたり、くもっていなければ。
　We can enjoy them all night. 星が出ていれば、一晩中楽しめるね。

　The stars are there during the day, too. 星は、昼間も空にあるんだよね。
　But you can’t see them because of the sun. でも、太陽の光があるから、見えない。

Once the sun sets, they appear. 日が沈むと、星が現れてくる。
When the moon is bright, they’re less visible. 月の光が明るいと、星は少し見えづらくなるね。

We look at the stars using constellation names. 星座の名前を使って星をながめるよね。
Yeah, ancient people drew lines in the sky. 大昔の人たちは、空に線を引いた。

They named the groups by the shape that the stars formed. 星の構成で星座を名づけた。
The Great Bear is a good example. おおくま座は、いい例だね。

Is the group of stars shaped like a polar bear? 北極熊の形に見えるのかな?
Well, we can view it as a bear or some other animal. 熊か、そんな動物に見えるね。

The stars within the same group are far apart. グループを構成する星は、離ればなれ。
Right. But, they look as if they were together. そうだね。でも、一緒のように見える。

Besides, the stars are so far away from us. それに、星たちは、ぼくらからは遠く離れている。
We are only seeing how they looked in the past. 星の過去の姿を見ているだけなんだね。

Their light takes many years to reach us. 星の光が地球に届くまでに時間がかかるからね。
Exactly. The sky is full of imagination. そうそう。空は想像に満ちているってことなんだね。

空を見上げるだけで、よいのです。

For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.

Only in the darkness, you can see the stars.
