Life is becoming.（生きるとはねがうものになっていくこと）
Today, I devote this to my mother.
I am beside her — the person who made me a challenger, who encouraged me through a solitary decade of becoming. Now, at ninety-four and a half, at the liminal doorstep, crossing the fragile threshold of heart and breath, her self-agency is still clear.
She looks up at me, holding my hand tightly, and says,
“Rikko, you’re wider than the sky. Life is becoming.”
Ten years ago, I wrote:
I aspired to create an empathetic computer—a mirror of the mind that helps us see what is otherwise invisible and cultivates awareness and skills through practice.
You might not believe it, but I actually sent a letter to His Holiness the Dalai Lama — to awaken my self-agency and turn that aspiration into a commitment.
I needed to act — to tell someone who could gently receive such a word of hope without judgment. I thought he might hold it with compassion.
Back then, no one knew what we might now call Empathetic AI. It was still a vision that would take years of grinding work to make real.
But we would need something beyond giving answers.
Hey, no one else can live your life instead! So be it.
Today, it’s already clear that we need it more than ever. Empathetic AI interacts through context, with implicit prompts both ways.
Now, it is becoming real — after a decade of patient work, in a way no one else has quite tried.
And you might not believe this either — but we are beginning to realize it with a small circle of schoolkids in Japan, through the Empatheme Lab — already coming to life.
Today, SomniQ turns thirteen — the company we started on my birthday to carry this vision forward. Like these kids, life is becoming through practice — unfolding, growing, awakening.
